HELP WITH DEBT Christmas stocking

by Arthur Childs, Chartered Financial Planner

As our thoughts turn to Christmas you may wonder why we have chosen the subject of debt for this issue of MoneyTalk. After all we spend our time trying to help our clients build up their wealth and future security so they will not be in debt. It is simply the startling knowledge that Britain's personal debt will have increased by around £1 million by the time you have finished reading this.

We hope that the issue of debt is of no interest to you but we would like to bring your attention to a new section of our website dealing with debt because you may be meeting a family member or friend over the Christmas period who is having problems in this area. We are not offering our services to help with debt as that is not really what we do. However, we know where a person with debt problems should turn to and where they should not, and that information is now included on our website.

In this new section we list some practical suggestions which are pretty obvious ones but sometimes when people are getting into problems with debt they do everything but take sensible courses of action. There is also a link to a budget calculator provided by the FSA and links to the free debt counselling agencies that we are happy to recommend.

The directors, advisers and staff at Arch would like to extend to you their very best wishes for an enjoyable and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous 2008.

If you would like to discuss any of the issues raised by this Guide please ask your usual Arch adviser, telephone 0845 3700 661 or email enquiries@arch-fp.co.uk. However, if you need help with debt we would encourage you to use the excellent free services of the local Citizens Advice Bureau.
