PREFERRED FUNDS RESEARCH

We have redesigned the area of our website which deals with our preferred funds and hope that you will take a look at the information which is now readily available to you.

There are several thousand funds available to UK investors without including pension funds, life assurance funds and offshore funds. We find it helpful to narrow these down to around 150 funds which we are happy to recommend to our clients depending on their particular requirements. As the basis of our choice we now use the Citywire Manager Ratings although our website also shows the ratings given by Standard & Poor and Lipper.

Citywire reflects the performance of the individual fund manager rather than focusing on individual funds and allocates a rating of AAA, AA, or A. Only a handful of managers receive a rating. The ranking and rating methodology adopted by Citywire has been approved by AKG, a leading firm of actuaries.

When looking at a table of funds in any particular sector you can click on one of the underlined headings to see a statement about ‘Citywire Manager Rating’, ‘Standard & Poor’ or ‘Lipper Score for Preservation’ together with a link to the particular ratings agency website. Further information on most of the fund managers listed can also be found by following the link on their names.

Please note that which fund or funds we actually recommend from the preferred funds will depend on a number of things including the personal financial situation of the investor; the investor's attitude to risk for this particular type of investment; the investor's existing portfolio of investments and where the new fund or funds is to fit in; the investor's need for capital growth or income, or both; the investor's age; the investor's particular requirements, for example in respect of socially responsible funds; our experience of the fund management group and particularly if we have met the fund manager.
